02 Brian and Chris: Vectors

The run-down: 4 musicians. 3 studios. 8 songs. 2 remixes. 4 methods. One musical mosaic.

First principles: "Northward Nimbus" and "Rachera del Espacio" were recorded during the sessions that yielded bnc's eponymous debut. Dulcet electric piano holds the center while other instruments swirl: Bay breezes and silken cello, on "Northward Nimbus", and guitar fractured against distant rhythms in "Rachera del Espacio". Chilly the most? Clearly.

Other voices: remixes. The broken drum and bass of Antimatter's version of "The Science of Vectors" complements jhno's funked-up take on "Jakarta International Airport"—digital technology reshapes original structures and upends sonic palettes while retaining the bnc imprint.

Solo flights: "Pristina" and "The Eyelids of Bodhidharma" are Brian and Chris respectively—each player's first foray into digital music assembly. The songs were stitched together at friend (see below) Jeff's house. In the living room. In the house: Ms. Jen Tait, with wordless vocals, Mr. Chris Palmatier and his infinite guitar... and a phone in the background.

Live interpretations: "Katzenjammer" and the hidden bonus track chart the group's expansion from two to four with the addition of Tom Petersen and Jeff Van Earwage—and the consequent rise in volume. Some might say these songs rock like whooping a baboon's ass with an ironing board... or that they're a signal of things to come.
