01 Brian and Chris: (s/t)
The year was 1998. Brian was asked to compose music for a film and Chris had access to a studio. These two friends from college, recently relocated to San Francisco, forged a symbiotic relationship, sequestering themselves in Pig’s Head studio – sometimes until 4am on a school night. Having completed the music for the film, the two felt compelled to continue. Their eponymous, mostly instrumental debut is the result. This genre-agnostic release saw Brian and Chris sitting at every chair in the band room except saxophone – a role ably filled on three songs by virtuosic reedman John Ingle.
These songs offer a taste of everything from bluegrass-inspired acoustic guitar to high-octane rock, shards of fractured electronic percussion to sonorous gamelan-infused passages, all flavors in delicate balance. As they say in Sweden, “Why have dinner when you can have a smörgåsbord?”
